One of the main advantages of VOIP is the pricing.  VOIP is significantly less expensive than traditional phone lines.  You can make calls between computers for no cost at all.  The cost to call traditional phone lines is a fraction of the cost of traditional phone lines.

Another significant advantage of VOIP is the fact that it is portable.  You can receive calls and make calls anywhere you have a broadband connection.  This means you can travel, work from home, change offices all with no downtime for your phone service.

Another advantage of VOIP is in the plentiful feature rich, low-cost options.  You can use call forwarding, call waiting, caller ID, voicemail, three-way calling and more all at no extra charge with VOIP.

There are two main disadvantages mentioned by VOIP providers that are honest with potential clients.  One disadvantage of VOIP is the fact that it may not work in a power outage.  VOIP requires a broadband connection, and a broadband connection needs power to run.  Unlike a traditional phone that can work without electricity, traditional VOIP will not.

The second main disadvantage is quality. The call quality can be a problem only if the solution is not carefully planned out by an experienced professional. In most cases, the VoIP call quality can be better than most land lines if done properly, and much worse if the solution is not well thought, not to mention VoIP quality is improving every single day.
